A New Era for Electric Vehicle Design
The IONIQ 5’s progressive design explores a new design freedom offered by a dedicated BEV platform. It evokes the daring attitude of the Hyundai Pony, the company’s first production car. The IONIQ 5 also highlights Hyundai’s 45-year journey to become a part of customer’s lifestyles, creating a common thread from past to present and future.
With an exterior that achieves unique proportions on a 3,000-mm wheelbase and emphasizes EV specific typology, the IONIQ 5 further redefines what’s possible for an electric vehicle. Most impressively, the IONIQ 5 is capable of providing Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, turning the vehicle into a charger on wheels.
Exterior Innovation
The innovative design of the IONIQ 5 is perhaps most impressive on the exterior. It starts with aero-optimized wheels that echo the Parametric Pixel design theme. Completing the IONIQ 5’s perfected proportions, the wheels are available in a super-sized 20-inch diameter. These are the largest rims ever fitted to a Hyundai EV.
Adding stylishness, the front of the vehicle is equipped with Hyundai’s first clamshell hood that minimizes panel gaps for optimal aerodynamics. Auto flush door handles outfit the sides to provide clean surface styling and enhanced aerodynamic efficiency.
Merging together at the doors, the front and rear of the vehicle offer another instance of Hyundai’s Parametric Dynamics design, which was first seen on the all-new Tucson. Inspire by Hyundai’s 45 EV concept, the strong C-pillar shape gives the IONIQ 5 a commanding presence, even from a distance.
The Mission for a New Mobility Experience
SangYup Lee, the Senior Vice President and Head of the Hyundai Global Design Center, said, “A new mobility experience for the next generation—this was the mission from the first day we began this project, to look ahead towards the horizon, but stay fundamentally Hyundai. IONIQ 5 is the new definition of timeless, providing a common thread linking our past to the present and future.”
This is the mission the IONIQ 5 brings to customers. It also offers a range of power electric systems for every driver’s mobility needs. The IONIQ 5 is available in several configurations, including two battery pack options — either a58 kWh or 72.6 kWh — and two electric motor layouts — either with a rear motor only or with both front and rear motors.
