Hyundai Has the Most Combined IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ and TOP SAFETY PICK Awards
At the end of last year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced the current IIHS 2020 Top Safety Picks. Yet again, Hyundai took sole leadership as the most Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ awarded brand in the industry when equipped with optional front crash prevention and specific headlights.
Hyundai: Now the Top Awarded Brand
Adding the latest awards to their lineup, Hyundai now offers 11 Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ models in the United States. Now, two Hyundai SUVs have Top Safety Pick+ ratings. Previously, Hyundai was the leading awarded brand in 2018 and was tied for the top industry spot in August and February of 2020.
By adding another Hyundai model to the award winning list, all current Hyundai SUV models are IIHS Top Safety Picks and Top Safety Pick+ award winners. This model was the 2021 Hyundai Palisade SUV, which the IIHS awarded the 2020 Top Safety Pick+ designation. The model earned the award by standardizing LED headlamps on all 2021 trim levels.
Understanding IIHS Standards and Methodology
Brian Latouf, the Chief Safety Office of Hyundai Motor North America, said of the IIHS awards, “The IIHS continues to set a very high bar for Top Safety Pick awards. Performing well in these tests helps keep our customers and their families safe.”
The IIHS is a private nonprofit organization funded by automobile insurance companies and insurance organizations. It’s mission is to “reduce losses from motor vehicle crashes.” They do so by reviewing deaths, injuries, and property damage that results from motor vehicle crashes, as well as by researching and reporting on crashworthiness, crash avoidance, and roadway design.
IIHS determines the Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ award winners through several stringent safety crash tests, and TSP+ winners undergo even stricter tests. These tests include a Driver’s Side Small Overlap Front crash test, a Passenger Side Small Overlap Front crash test, a Moderate Overlap Front crash test, a Side Impact crash test, Head Restraints tests, a Front Crash Prevention Systems test, and a Headlight Rating test.
